If you are looking for a book to uplift your mood and brighten your spirits, this is not the book for you. It's a mystery and while I did think it was a good book, it could have been titled A Series of Unfortunate Events.
The story, set in the summer of 1944, is about a 13 year old girl named Gretchen Gilman who is working as a news reporter for the Gazette in a small Oklahoma town during World War II. Gretchen's life changes drastically when Faye Tatum is killed in her home, just up the street from Gretchen's. Faye was an artist, the mother Gretchen's friend, Barb and had a love for dancing. The prime suspect in the case: Faye's husband, Clyde, who while home on leave from the war, learned of his wife's love of dancing at the town's "Blue Light" club while he was gone. Town talk turns to gossip when rumor spreads that a man had been seen entering the Tatum home at night while Clyde was in the war. It isn't until 50 years, when Gretchen receives a letter from home that she learns exactly what happened on the unfortunate summer night in 1944.
Letter from Home won the Agatha Award for Best Mystery Novel of 2003.
